Southern Bears has been an active club for over 30 years in Atlanta. As a group, we plan many social activities throughout the year for the enjoyment of our members and their guests. We hold monthly movie days, dinners at various local retaurants, bar nights at The Eagle, as well as many other local events and festivals, such as taking part in the Atlanta Pride Parade.
Southern Bears is also proud to hold events to benefit various charities in the area, where we donate both our time as well as money. We like to plan enough events so that members can participate if and when they want and still feel like there are enough things they want to do as a group.
Come join us for our events. We welcome guests at all club activities.
A Short History of Atlanta Bear Fest (ABF)
Atlanta Bear Fest (ABF) is an annual multi-day gathering for the bear community (sub-groups of gay and bisexual men characterized by traits like body hair and stouter frames,) and their admirers.
Origins & Evolution
The event officially adopted the name in 2009, evolving from the annual "bear runs" hosted by the Southern Bears, an Atlanta LGBTQ+ social club with over 30 years of history. Traditionally held over major holiday weekends (like July 4th), ABF grew from a regional meetup into a major Southeastern tradition, drawing guests nationwide and across the globe with immersive themes.
The Festival Experience
A typical ABF weekend blends relaxed socialization with high-energy nightlife. Signature events include:
- Daytime Pool Parties: Hosted at the main hotel featuring guest DJs, games, and vendor markets.
- Nightlife Takeovers: Evening dance parties and contests hosted in partnership with legendary local Atlanta venues like the Atlanta Eagle.
Resilience & Leadership
ABF’s longevity is rooted in its all-volunteer staff. After pandemic-related pauses in 2020 and 2021, the community suffered the devastating loss of John, the Southern Bears' beloved president. With the festival's future in jeopardy, organizer Casey stepped up to lead. The resulting 2022 return became one of the most successful and emotionally significant runs in the event's history.
A Charitable Mission
Unlike standard circuit parties, ABF is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit endeavor. All proceeds above baseline operating costs are donated directly to local charities. Over the last 10 years, ABF has raised over $95,000 for vital Atlanta organizations, including: PALS (Pets Are Loving Support), Dog Days Rescue.
You Are Home
